We recently attended a great business session at the Fine Food Expo (held at the Brisbane Exhibition and Convention Centre), where Peter McMahon, General Manager of Stokehouse, and Ben O’Donoghue, Chef & Owner of Billykart Kitchen spoke about the stresses of kitchen fires.
Peter spoke about the recent devastating fire in his Stokehouse restaurant in St Kilda, Melbourne. Though the iconic restaurant was completely destroyed, the overwhelming support and words of encouragement on social media allowed the brand’s credibility to remain intact. A pop-up store was launched, which now brings in as much profit as either level of the original restaurant. This example demonstrates overtly that when faced with adversity, true customer brand loyalty shows through – or shines, in this case.
Former TV chef Ben O’Donoghue also had a similar experience to share, with an oil fire starting in the kitchen of his new restaurant Billykart Kitchen.
“Billykart Kitchen occupies a 1940s wooden building, and the whole thing would’ve gone up in flames if I didn’t have good quality equipment,” he said.
“That’s one thing you must never do – don’t skimp on your equipment!”
