I recently stumbled across a little food business in Melbourne called Mamas Meatballs, located in the Spotlight Centre in South Melbourne. I walked past and was so intrigued by their look and menu I just had to give it a go – and I’m glad I did.
I was met at the counter by a lovely man by the name of Zoran, who asked if I had been to Mamas Meatballs before. I advised that no I hadn’t and Zoran asked if I had 15 seconds for him to explain the concept to me. Being an avid foodie I was happy to give him more than 15 seconds as it all looked and sounded incredible.
It is a really simple 3 step concept that makes it fast and efficient to grab a lunch on the go (or a take home dinner for that matter).
- Choose your meat balls – (You have six different flavours to choose from, all which are lovingly hand formed by Mamas themselves).
- Cup, Sub, Wrap, Roll or Mini Roll
- Add a bit extra (your choice of sauce, cheese and salad).
I opted for the Traditional, Pork and Fennel and added a Chicken and Pinenut for good measure. I chose the cup – no bread for this big belly. My extra’s – traditional tomato sauce, mozzarella and spinach leaves.
All I can say is WOW! Delicious! You can taste the beautiful herbs and spices and each was flavoured differently enough that you could easily distinguish between them. And let me tell you, they were generous, filling and satisfying and I struggled to eat the 5! They also do take home packs for those that might be feeling lazy but want a fresh, homemade quality product.
It is such a great concept that is versatile, there is a vege option, great for those who steer away from bread, a sensational protein hit and worth every single calorie!
I will definitely be back and suggest you hot foot it there too! They are looking to open more stores (fingers crossed). So go and give them a try! Support the little guys starting out with a great unique concept… oh and by the way, they are a Silver Chef customer!

Review by Simone Smith-Henry
Simone Smith-Henry lives between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast. She LIVES TO EAT she doesn’t eat to live.
She loves cooking for or with her husband, family and friends and is part of a world food group where invitees have to bring an authentic dish from the hosts chosen country.
Spends most of her disposable income on eating out, food in general and loves trying new ingredients as well as reading about food, nutrition and new food fads.
And is already thinking about her next meal before she has finished the current one (much to her husband’s frustration) and is just too in love with food to narrow down an absolute favourite.
